We travelled to the Elephant Rescue Transit in the morning. We observed and photographed the rescued baby elephants as they were given milk and food. Once they reach a certain size, they are introduced into the national park. Lots of elephant souvenirs were purchased to commemorate the experience. Afterward we jumped into some jeeps for a safari through Udawalawe National Park. We saw lizards, birds, elephants, water buffalo, and spotted deer. It was amazing!! Then we had lunch before travelling to Weligama and Unawatuna Turtle Hatchery. We were able to observe turtles at various ages in their pools and also to see where they place rescued eggs so they can safely hatch away from predators (human, avian, or canine). We helped clean several pools and replaced the water in them. The floors were also swept before we were given the opportunity to release 10 turtles into the ocean. The students named their turtles and then placed them on the beach to let them reach the ocean – and experience they will never forget!
