Grade 8 - Chiang Mai, Thailand (2019)

Day 4: Group 2 – Thai Cooking Class, Climbing Wall, Low Ropes, Night Bazaar

  Chiang Mai, Thailand

Posted March 13, 2019 by Candice Alm

Excited for a more subdued on campus day after two energy-draining days, group three ventured around campus for different activities such as a Thai cooking class, rock climbing session, and a low ropes obstacle course. Then, to counteract the rest of the day, the group headed out to a night bazaar for dinner, ending the day off.

Students entered an outdoor kitchen area, where they met three helpful sous-chefs who taught them how to make a three course traditional Thai meal step by step. These consisted of a broth with glass noodles, vegetables, egg tofu, and pork meatballs, which was the appetizer. The main dish was Panaeng curry chicken served with rice, and to top it off was a dessert that was made with banana, coconut milk and cream, pandan leaves, and palm sugar. To make a key ingredient of the dessert – coconut cream – the kids learned the hard work which was put into making kilograms of coconut cream back when it was made by hand. After completing their own dishes, students sat down and enjoyed the hot meal that was freshly cooked by themselves.

Next, the group made their way further into the campus, where they found a climbing wall in the middle of clusters. Here, they took turns climbing the different levels of walls – slanting outwards, inwards, and straight up. When they finished giving their muscles a good workout, they followed it up with a low ropes obstacle. For this activity, they were split into two teams, and went around the obstacle courses while helping each other out. Even though there were some scrapes, rope burns, and bruises along the way, everyone had a fun time and made it safely to the end of the obstacle course.

Lastly, to finish the off with some excitement out of campus, the group ventured into the towns of Chiang Mai and shopped until they dropped. It was here where they were given freedom to go wherever they pleased for dinner as well as buy whatever they pleased. The students really appreciated this opportunity very much because it wasn’t very often that they get to make their own choices for the evening.

All in all, group two enjoyed this day immensely, as it was relaxing compared to their other days of activities, yet also exciting because of the open ended choices given to them.
