Without any surprise, the 2019 Laos Experience Week trip began exactly as most would have expected. Illogical jokes, far too much giggling, unmanageable energy and excitement, and a certain lack of maturity. What MAY be surprising is that those very characteristics seemingly describe the teacher team more than it does the kids. To be fair, Ms. Lam being asked if she was at least 15 (the minimum age to sit in the emergency exit row on the plane) definitely contributed to and validated our child-like demeanor.
Despite the exceptionally early start, all involved encountered a smooth, albeit long travel day, with a healthy layover in the labyrinth-like Bangkok airport. After a short flight from Bangkok, we were warmly welcomed into Luang Prabang by the World Volunteer Organization who helped us to settle in, fed us an amazing feast (how many spring rolls are too many spring rolls?), and treated us to a lovely stroll through the local night markets. All agreed that locking up our wallets might be a good idea as there are far too many items at far too great a price to pass up. At least that’ll keep our minds off the prospect of running into any eight-legged creatures in the next couple of days…
