We started our day saying goodbye to Shangri-La and set out for our second hike of the trip to our camping site. After about three hours of hiking and many snowball fights predominantly initiated by Harley and carried out through surprise attacks, we settled for the night amongst the vast terrain high into the mountains of Yunnan. It was there that we enjoyed a traditional dish made by the local family that provided us with tents and equipment as well as food. In partners, we made our first attempts at constructing our tents, trying to avoid settling in as much yak, cow and goat poo as possible. Later, the boys helped out by carrying wood from the houses to the bonfire.
At the sight of snow piled up the side of a nearby mountain, many quickly ran towards the cliff. There were snowballs being thrown everywhere and people tackling each other into the snow. A little later, we were all covered in snow and freezing. Thankfully, the family started a bonfire in which we could make attempts to get dry. At around 6, we had a dinner provided by the family consisting of potatoes, rice, green vegetables and minced yak meat. Following that was our free time where some would go back to their tents to avoid the cold, and others would sit around the fire ’til it died. Tensions grew as we were all on guard for any pranksters planning on bombarding us with snow at sunrise the next day. In the end, the day consisted of snow, pranks, yaks and even more unbearable puns.
