Today was our first big day of traveling. We had an early start, which was much harder for some then others! Leaving Madrid we passed fields and farms where olive trees stretched as far as the eye could see. The morning bus ride provided many with a chance to catch up on some sleep before we cruised into Cordoba for lunch. After a traditional Spanish meal of meatballs and spaghetti it was time to explore what this city had to offer.
With it’s traditional white buildings, winding alleys and typical Spanish tapas Cordoba did not disappoint. The highlight was definitely the guided tour of a Mosque built in 711 that was converted to a Catholic Cathedral in 1236. Despite the change in denomination the building was able to keep much of the original architecture and it now features mahogany carvings from Cuba and not one but two pipe organs which are still used for regular services.
After the tour of the Cathedral it was time to hit the streets where we discovered statues, hidden courtyards and traditional Spanish architecture. There was also time for some souvenir shopping before we boarded the bus again and headed to Seville.
After settling in to our hotel rooms it was time for dinner and then a very competitive game of trivia about the places we have seen and the people that we have met so far on the trip.
Tomorrow we will get to explore the city of Seville.
