Macao 2: Local CAS Program

Skills, Thrills and Hills

  Macau, Macau SAR China

Posted November 18, 2014 by Mr. Chignall

The cool mist parted the lake and gave way to a beautiful sunrise for day 2. The students awoke to the chirping of the birds and the sweet smells of breakfast. The eager students clambered out of bed and made their way to the soft pillowy red bean buns and crispy caramelized man tous. The journey began with each group being told which activities they would do throughout the day. Each group over the course of the week will participate in a cable way hike, raft building and Chinese painting. Cable way hiking began by students being instructed on the appropriate way to equip their safety gear. Dragonfly was professional and caring in the best way possible. After suiting up, they began their scenic ascent up the lush, forested gorge. The sounds of the waterfalls and birds gave us a natural orchestra as we climbed along the bridges and planks to reach the summit.  When they approached the top, they could look down and see the raft building group hard at work. Raft building brought out new skills and talents that students were not aware they had. They learned about planning, teamwork, and communication as they were taught a variety of knots that allowed them to bring their plan to fruition. As they gazed out onto the lake, the landscape gave inspirational ideas for their Chinese painting. The calm and crystalline waters of the lake danced in their minds and paint palettes as their brush strokes evoked the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. After a day of experiential learning, the enticing fragrance of Chinese delicacies brought them to the dinner table. In the evening, the students prepared for their Community Service project. After a long day of exhilarating activities, the students retired to their rooms, to rest for another action packed adventure.
