Macao 2: Local CAS Program

Day 4: On the hunt for elephants

Kota Kinabatangan, Malaysia

Posted March 12, 2014 by Sandra Kuipers

Day 4: Another River Cruise

We had another early start at 5:30am so we could be on the Kinabatangan River as early as possible to go look for wildlife. The sky had just started to light up as the sun rose higher and higher. We spotted several white belly Fish Eagles, white egrets, horn-bills and 1 kingfisher.  We also saw many monitor lizards. We only saw a few monkeys today. We were hoping to find the elephants as we had found the fresh tracks yesterday. No luck.

We came back to the lodge just in time for breakfast. We all worked up an appetite on the river. Next we decided to go for a walk into the little village to visit the store. Some people were hoping to find chips!  It was a fun walk into town and we found the shop. We also found the local elementary school so we went in for a visit

. We got to have a quick visit with the students and the youngest students at 4 years old were very excited to see us and say hello to us. We snapped a few good photos here.

Then we were about to head back to our lodge when it started raining. We thought we would have have walk in the rain but we were lucky and our tour guide – Patrick showed up in the van!  Yah!  He rescued us and drove us back to the lodge so we didn’t have to walk in the rain.

Now we are relaxing and reading or napping before we head back out on the river again for another wildlife safari.
