Macao 2: Local CAS Program

Day 1 Morning Adventures

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Posted March 9, 2014 by Sandra Kuipers

Hello blog followers,

The grade 9 group have touched down safely in Cambodia with everyone intact.  After clearing customs, we were whisked away from the airport, immediately off for our first site.  Our first stop, the Independence Monument.  The site was dedicated to a platoon of soldiers who gave their lives during Cambodia’s revolution in the mid to late 1970’s.

After a brief stop at the monument, the group moved onto one of Cambodia’s Killing Fields, infamously known as a site of Cambodian genocide during the rule of the Khmer Rogue regime.  The students experienced the magnitude and significance of the site as it was explained to them how millions of innocent civilians were executed during that time.

After the sobering stop at the Killing Fields, we headed out for a long-awaited lunch.  After filling our bellies with delicious food, we have checked into the Starry Angkor Hotel.  The kids have a couple of hours of free time at the hotel before we head up the hill-side to watch the sunset.  Check back soon for another update.

  • Buddhist temple build within the Killing Field
  • One of the Killing Fields outside Siem Reap
  • A grim reminder of Cambodia's bloody past
  • A interesting colour scheme
  • A good start to the trip
  • Baking under the sun!
  • Independence momument from a different angle
  • Fancy stonework

  • Check out our stylish new hats!
  • Let's get the adventure started!

Hi guys, nice pictures. It is very hot right? I really want to see the foods. You guys when to the Independence Monument Right? From what I know The Independence Monument is in Phnom Penh It was built in 1958 for Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. It stands on the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the centre of the city. It was designed by Vann Molyvann. Enjoy your time in there and keep taking good pictures. 🙂

Wow!!! I like it. The sight, weather, and your smiles are telling me that you guys are having a lot of fun. I also love the bus that you guys rode. It's really nice inside. When I look at the skulls, they really scared me. Whatever, have a good time and take lots of good photos. Mr. Liu we depend on you since you got a fabulous camera. Have fun and enjoy. Bye Bye 🙂

Thanks for the comments everyone! Yes it is very warm here 33C today and it's suppose to be 36+ the rest of the week. People were very glad to get out of their school uniforms and into something more comfortable. We'll be sure to try and post a few food pictures tomorrow. – Mr. Liu
