Macao 2: Local CAS Program

Back to School

Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

Posted March 10, 2014 by Sandra Kuipers

Hello blog followers,

This morning the grade 9s went on their community outreach trip to a local Cambodian school.

After sitting in on one of the elementary school classes, our group was asked to teach a brief lesson to the class they were in. After overcoming their nerves, our students got the local kids really into their activities. Our kids were quite impressed at the abilities and knowledge the Cambodian kids had.

After the lesson, we help the school re-pave the road leading into their school after some recent flooding. The school visit ended off with a ceremonial hand-off of school supplies to all the students at the local school and a very personal thank you and send off.

Pictures of the school visit will be posted very shortly.

The kids were so cute and so glad to see our students. I popped around to the different classrooms and I saw a variety of fun activities taking place. Some students were teaching math skills, some were teaching English vocabulary and verbs (complete with actions), while others were teaching the alphabet and playing games like Seven up! They all did great!

The Cambodian kids were a bit shy (but so were we) about interacting with us, their guests. But everybody really warmed up to each other before long and there were laughs and smiles before long. Language was a challenge for teaching but the grade 9s did a great job! Thanks for the questions. -Mr. Liu
