Macao 2: Local CAS Program

Sights from Day 3 in Taiwan

Where: Tempus Hotel Taichung

Taichung, Taiwan

Posted March 13, 2013 by Sandra Kuipers

Hi All,

Our experience week trip continues on with another full day of activities through central Taiwan.  After leaving Le Midi just outside of Nantou, we headed up the road first to Sun Moon Lake.  The group took a boat cruise around the lake on a brilliant clear day.  After the memorable boat cruise, the group when went up the road from the harbour to have a traditional Taiwanese lunch.  Surprisingly, the students received the meal quite well with most students filling up for a busy afternoon.  Those students who weren’t quite filled up from lunch were given the opportunity to grab a lunch supplement at a nearby 7-11.

The afternoon began with a visit to the Kanghsing paper factory.  After a quick look at the paper-making process and a explanation of all the types of paper that can be produced, the students were given the opportunity to create a print on a freshly-pressed sheet of paper

.  Next up was a trip to the Tao-Mi paper church where students learned about the history of the paper church and went around for pictures of the scenic area around the paper church.

The 3rd stop of the afternoon took the students to the 921 Earthquake Museum.  There the students learned about the power of the Earth as they walked through an area that was once a middle school to observe how an earthquake drastically changed the natural and urban landscape of the area that the museum is now built around.  The students then took in a 3D movie explaining some more details about earthquakes which the students enjoyed.  On the bus ride into Taichung, some kids gave testimonies as the value of the knowledge they’ve learnt from the earthquake museum.

Dinner was at a very unique restaurant offering Taiwanese cuisine set to the background of old motor vehicles along with mock Taiwanese and Japanese themed stores decorating the inside of the restaurant.  After completing dinner, the TIS contingent headed to the hotel where we are now resting for the evening.

We’ll see you tomorrow for yet another update.
