Macao 2: Local CAS Program

Day 2 – the fun continues

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Posted March 13, 2013 by Sandra Kuipers

From art to archery to Thai culture to the night market, a good time was had by all. The students are loving the new experiences and are consistently demonstrating enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards our adventures.  They are representing TIS with great pride.  Here is what the students have to say about today….

Today we had a chance to do archery for the afternoon. We first learned all the safety rules to prevent ourselves from getting hurt. In order to aim at the middle, we needed to be steady and patient. At the end, we had a mini competition. Ivan got the highest score of 61. Alison Tang

Today, group 2 went to Batik which is a type of Thai painting using hot wax and colored water

. We first had to draw our designs on paper then transfer them to a piece of cloth. After that, we had to use special tools to outline what we had drawn using hot wax. The lady who demonstrated it to us made it seem like it was really easy, but it actually was hard to control where the wax went.  Finally we had to paint the cloth the color we wanted it to be. Mine didn’t turn out that well, but I had a lot of fun learning how to do Batik paintings! Ashley Knowler

This morning, we learned about Thailand culture.  First, we learned some Thai phrases for shopping. In Thai, girls end their sentences with “ka” and boys will say “krabb” to be polite. After that, the leader put us into groups and we played a game about Thai culture.  We had about five minutes to improvise what the card was telling us to do. I really enjoyed playing this game; we got to know that there cultural traditions.  Overall, I think all of us had a great time learning about the culture of Thailand. Tiffany Ng

Group 2 participated in Batik which is a type of Thai painting using hot wax to trace the picture and then we colored them with paint and water. My artwork looked really bad and I thought of doing it all over again. We had lunch at a really nice place near where we did Batik. We ate a lot of good foods and I enjoy looking at the beautiful view while eating. One thing I didn’t like about eating there was there was a bee flying around our table. Maybe the bugs love us too much? Overall, It was very fun today. Sabrina Mendes

Tonight, we went to the night bazaar. There were a lot of people there. In the night bazaar, there were a variety of things, such as Thailand’s mango sticky rice, accessories, clothing etc. My friends and I bought a lot of stuff. We also tried traditional Thai food. Overall, the night bazaar was really interesting. Danica Ng

Good job, Ivan! Sounds like another exciting day. Are you all going to be Hunger Games heroes like Katniss with your bows and arrows?
