Hi Tigers Fans!
Both TIS teams had a productive day 2 at the SCISAC volleyball tournament.
Boys
The boys starting the day in tough against the defending champs and hosts from XIS. Playing in hostile territory the boys were overwhelmed losing 17-25, 12-25. The boys never manged any real inconsistency, as the XIS boys always seemed to stay in the rally just a little big longer. A
great effort by the boys regardless.
The boys then played against IVY
. The boys controlled the flow of the game the first set winning 25-18. IVY then found a higher gear in the 2nd set, taking command of the match despite strong resistance from the TIS boys. The boys were overcome 18-25. The 3rd set found the boys regain their composure and take it to IVY. IVY didn’t back down though and took the Tigers close to the brink. The Tigers did eventually prevail 15-12
The boys then wrapped up the day battling YCIS from Chongqing. The boys shows some early nerves but pulled together strong in the late going of each set winning the match 25-20, 25-21.
Girls
The girls found themselves similarly in tough against XIS in the first match. The girls played tentatively at first, frazzled by the prospect of coming up against a rival that has as of then, hadn’t been defeated. The girls did eventually manage to shake off the rust and string together a more consistent effort winning set 1 25-20. The second set, saw the Tigers put an effort more reflective on their true powerhouse potential. The team was lead on offense by Nicole Krause with 6 aces. Coco Chiang and Lynn Lee each contributed 2 kills in the set, leading to a 25-13 win.
The girl Tigers similarly found themselves flat-footed at the opening of the second game against IVY. The Tigers saw an alarming 2-8 deficit build up before coach Cheung had seen enough and decided to call a timeout. What was communicated in the timeout must have worked as the
girls came out firing afterwards
. IVY fought back with a rock-steady defensive effort in the end. The Tigers did finally prevail, 25-21. The second set was won with an electric serving performance by Alison Tang, racking 12 consecutive serves, and 2 aces to close out a previously close set. With the set win the Tiger won the match 25-21, 25-9. The Tigers were led on offensive by Coco Chiang with 8kills on 58% attacking rate, and Mika Ao dishing out 6 assists. On defense, Genevieve Guimond was busy, racking up 11 serve receive attempts, with a 91% passing efficiency.
The girls wrapped up the day against first year SCISAC school YCIS. The team rested some starters, opting to go with the proven group from the earlier PRC tournament. The PRC group proved their worth, playing a steady serving game and strong defense when needed. A mismatch on paper, which translated to a mismatch on the court saw the Tigers claim a
straightforward 25-7, 25-12 win. Several Tigers, including Alvina Cho contributed well to the serving game and Dalia De Pina led the offense, racking up 5 kills in the match.
Both teams face off against HKA tomorrow morning in their final preliminary round games before the playoffs. The boys need a win vs. HKA to get into the 1 vs. 2 seeding playoff game vs. XIS. The girls have all but guaranteed themselves the first place seeding for the playoffs and will face the winner of XIS vs.IVY in the 1st vs. 2nd seeding playoff game. A win in the 1st vs. 2nd playoff games offer an automatic berth into the championship game, but a loss will force the Tigers into a longer route to reach the championships, having to play and win a semi-final game first.
It’ll be a big day for the Tigers tomorrow and there will hopefully be good news coming as the day progresses. Stay tuned to find out how the Tigers do in the playoffs.
