Today began bright and early with a bus trip into Zhaoqing to visit a local school. The TOPZ (The Outreach Program of Zhaoqing) initiative created by the Grade 5 team with the support of the principal, began to take shape. Students arrived at the school prepared to put into practice values and principles taught at TIS such as cooperation, hard work, responsibility and perseverance.
The first steps to helping the school were painting the walls surrounding the track. Students sanded down the old paint and applied a fresh white coat. Local grade 5 students spent an entire period engaging in games, activities and sharing stories about school life. Not only were our students able to practice their Mandarin, but were also able to further develop their interpersonal skills.
At the end of the morning, students were able to look back and admire their hard work by seeing the new face of the track and field complex
.
After a brief bus ride back to the hotel and a quick bite to eat, students headed out to their final round of activities (Paper Making, Rope Climbing, Raft Building).
As dusk settled across the lake, hot embers were set alight for our BBQ. Each group had a selection of foods to grill and savour. The night concluded with a blazing campfire accompanied by games, songs and a “scary” story. We pack up and head home tomorrow, but on the way, stop to complete our final activity, The Great Race.
