Macao 2: Local CAS Program

Sweet morning

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Posted March 14, 2012 by Sandra Kuipers

Good Morning!

Today we ventured out to the Bantay Srey Temple which was made of a a totally different kind of stone. It is more of a pink-orange colour. Apparently it was built so far from the empire, because it was not owned by the King. He didn’t want anyone else building temples that were better than his. Bantay Srey was built by the King’s teacher.

Our next stop was at the Cambodian Landmine Museum. The museum was started by a local Cambodian named Aki Ra. His parents were killed by the Khmer Rouge and he was taken as a child soldier. As a child he planted hundreds of landmines all over Cambodia for the Khmer Rouge. After defecting to the Vietnamese army he fought against the Khmer Rouge. Cambodia is the most heavily mined country in the world and Aki Ra decided to make amends by going into the jungle to disarm landmines

. The students learned about the horrible legacy of war and the effects on innocent children who have been maimed by landmines.

We next visited a palm sugar plantation where the students went on a feeding frenzy with this sweet treat. Parents…get ready for a delivery of sugar treats.

After lunch we headed back to the hotel for a rest and swim. This afternoon we are off to Ankor Wat and the night market.

Great times:)
