Macao 2: Local CAS Program

Welcome to the Jungle!

Where: Camp Bongkud

Ranau, Malaysia

Posted March 29, 2011 by Sandra Kuipers

Monday

After a drive hrough the misty mountains of Borneo, we arrived at Camp Bongkud. Students were qquickly introduced to ‘Camp Life’., and started nesting in their tents. Shortly after the rain started and we took refuge under the communal gazebo. After a hearty lunch students had a lesson in the local language, practiced a local dance and played instruments. Students also made beaded bracelets out of seeds.

Before supper we were given a tour of the village that we are here in support of. Students got to see first hand who they will be helping as part of their community service.

After supper we were treated to a performance by the village children, and our TIS students got to participate

. After the performance we had a little meet and greet where TIS students got to chat with the local kids.

Tuesday

As hard as it may be to believe, all of the students were up by 5:30 AM for a pre-dawn hike to the top of Golden Hill which overlooks the camp.

After breakfast we donned our work golves and began our community service projects using shovels, hoes, wheel barrows, and other various tools. It was a lot of hard work, but well worth it.

Note: The camp is without internet access, so updating the blog has been a challenge. Hopefully we can do a few more posts in the coming days!
