Current Situation
The grade 8 and 9 students are having a wonderful experience in Chiang Mai. Various activities have been organized by the Prem Centre including cooking lessons, night markets, and working with elephants, and visiting rural schools. The students are staying in great facilities located at the Prem Centre on the campus of the Prem Tinsulanonda International School.
Developing Situation
The Red Shirts (UDD) have announced plans for a peaceful and orderly political movement beginning on Sunday, March 14 in Bangkok. The movement will likely cause traffic delays as protestors gather outside key government offices. There are no plans to involve the Bangkok International Airport. The airport is 30km from Bangkok and should not be affected.
Thailand’s cabinet has initiated the Internal Security Act to ensure that the protests remain peaceful. The government has not enacted the more serious emergency decree and Gen Anupong said the army would not dispatch troops to prevent people from joining the rally in Bangkok.
The Yellow Shirts (PAD) have pledged to refrain from any political activity during the planned Sunday activities of the rival Red Shirts (UDD).
There have been no political protests or plans for a protest in Chiang Mai where the teams are located.
The airports are running normally. There have been no flight cancellations and no plans for future cancellations.
Our Plan
The teams will continue their activities in Chiang Mai.
Teams are scheduled to fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and then on to Macau on Saturday. These flights are still scheduled. The students will remain in the airport while they transfer planes.
We will continue to monitor the situation in Thailand. If there is any danger or if flights are canceled, then the students will remain in Chiang Mai until it is safe to proceed to Bangkok.
Parents should fully expect that students would arrive home on Saturday night as previously planned.
Any changes in situation will be communicated on the school website (portal.tis.edu.mo) and on the teams’ travel blogs (www.travelpod.com/members/tis).
