This year kindergarten students have been engaging in various collaborative arts projects. The project in the photograph is a painting of two black holes completed by several Senior Kindergarten students. Black holes were first identified by Einstein’s general theory of relativity, which showed that when a massive star dies it leaves behind a small dense remnant core. If the core’s mass is more than about three times the mass of the sun then the force of gravity overwhelms all other forces and produces a black hole.

It took seven weeks to complete this painting and the process of creating it was extensive. After painting the canvas black and marking out the two black holes, the children created space rocks. They used their fingers to poke lightweight clay and make textures like real space rocks. A combination of gold, silver and white paint was used to give the effect of having rocks, metals and gases in the black hole horizon.
