In our recent Artist-in-Residence program led by Ms Peta Houghton and Ms Shelley Smith-Dale, every Grade 4 student in the school designed one or more individual feathers to create the wings for the latest art installation. Each student chose a bright colour to paint on their canvas, then added unique details to the feathers with hand-drawn designs. No two feathers are alike.
This inspiration came from Kelsey Montague, a street artist powered and inspired by social media and interactive art. Kelsey studied in Florence and London, and her murals specifically invite the viewer into the piece of work thus creating a new art piece each time people share their experience online. Each pose by a person gives a different meaning and/or emotion to the piece.
Kelsey began the ‘what lifts you’ campaign to provide the opportunity for her community to share more about what inspires them in their life. She began filling blank walls with giant wings in which the viewer could literally step into the artwork. She has taken her wings all over the world, as can be seen using the hashtag #whatliftsyou.
We invite everyone at TIS to pose in front of the wings, located on the North Wing 3rd Floor, to create their own piece of art.
Remember to tag #whatliftsyou to become part of this wonderful worldwide movement.
