This morning, the fire alarm was set off at 9:10 at TIS. All students were evacuated promptly and safely to the front field.
Systems indicated that the alarm was set off in a science lab on the third floor of the South Wing. Secondary students were conducting a standard experiment involving hot plates and candle wax. No fire or smoke was generated but the alarm was triggered. Students and staff safely evacuated the building. The area and classrooms around the science lab were checked and cleared before everyone was allowed back to class.
In the afternoon, the school had a lockdown drill. Lockdown drills can be initiated for a number of reasons. For example, inclement weather situations such as a Typhoon 8, or an environmental release of chemicals, an airplane crash at the nearby airport, dangerous animals (snakes) on the school grounds or intruders at the school.
During a lockdown, students and staff are secured in classrooms or other safe places and communicate with the office. All students are accounted for and secured.
Lockdown drills are an important safety measure at TIS for all students, faculty and staff so that everyone is familiar with all necessary protocol and responsibilities to ensure that the school is safe and secure. Teachers explained to students about the lockdown in developmentally appropriate ways.
