TIS is thrilled to announce that Salva Dut, Founder of Water for South Sudan, will be TIS’ inaugural Activist-in-Residence from November 1-2. For two full days, Salva will share his story as a ‘lost boy’ and explain how he has responded to the needs of his community. He will meet students, parents and community members in an effort to inspire others to bring to life the TIS mission “to problem solve, think critically, and make positive changes in our global community”. In so doing, we hope he can span the distance and differences between Macau and South Sudan.
Salva’s residency will be facilitated by Inspire Citizens, a teacher-created collective that assists schools in building globally-minded, project-based learning environments. In preparation for Salva’s November visit, Inspire Citizens will provide professional development workshops for teachers on September 14th and will also work with students on September 15th to plan a leadership conference that will take place on November 2nd.
Through Salva Dut’s residency at TIS, we expect that students (and families) will learn about South Sudan and the need for clean, safe water. We hope that the Activist-in-Residence program will facilitate a deeper understanding about the connection between the actions we make in our daily lives, and the impact of those actions on people and other places in the world.
The TIS community will have the opportunity to get involved by attending a special cocktail reception on Thursday, November 1st from 7-9 pm in the BlackBox Theatre. There is no cost to attend the event, however, donation boxes will be available for those who wish to contribute to Water for South Sudan. More information about the cocktail reception will be posted in coming weeks, but please “save the date”!
