An African proverbs says “ To understand a man, I must walk a mile in his shoes.” This was the purpose for the recent Hong Kong volunteering trip – to give our students an opportunity to experience walking in someone else’s shoes.
On the weekend of 27-28 May, a team of TIS student volunteers led by school counselor Henry Lao, went to Hong Kong for the experiential activities. On Saturday, they joined the Blind X-perience and AIDs X-perience organised by Crossroads, and also the Elderly Simulation Program organised by Eldpathy.
The following day, the volunteers went to the Oxfam Interactive Education Centre where they learned more about the poverty in China. The trip also took them to visit one of the lowest income districts in Hong Kong – Sham Shui Po.
Our students had an enjoyable trip whilst gaining more insight into the needs and struggles of the minority groups and those less fortunate living in Hong Kong.
