TIS parents and students may have seen grade 12 student Talston Scott at Arts Night recently where he was selling his self-published photography book called Resident Gwei-Lo. The book is Talston’s passion project, a creative side project that he completed alongside his regular classes. The book contains a collection of photos he took from his travels around Asia and Macau since moving here a year and half ago. Its purpose is to document life in Macau and Southeast Asia and to illustrate the unique culture, landscapes and people in this region of the world.
Talston takes pictures as a hobby and whenever he returns home to Canada, he shares his photos with family and friends who are always in awe of the sites and images of Asia. Their positive reaction gave him the idea to make a book and when the project for school came up, it was the perfect opportunity to make it a reality.
Talston organized Resident Gwei-Lo using color themes, an idea that came about while he was organizing his photographs. He also drew inspiration from “Humans of New York,” a photoblog and book that features photos and interviews collected from the streets of New York City.
Talston sold a number of copies of his photography book at Arts Night. If you’re interested in buying a copy, it’s available through http://talstonscottportfolio.weebly.com or you can contact him through talston.scott@tis.edu.mo
