TIS parents may remember former elementary teaching assistant Bernadette Terra. We have good news to report! Bernadette will soon be launching a series of storybooks for children called Mak the City’s Friendly Dragon. There are a total of thirteen books in the series and a new story will be published every six months. The first two books, Mak and Friends and Mak’s Visitors, are set to come out on March 10th.
Bernadette’s inspiration for the book series came while working at TIS, and together with another former TA, Isabel Goitia, created the ideas and storylines for the books. Macau is the backdrop for the stories, which take place at various historical locations throughout the city. Bernadette says the books focus on the traditions, culture and heritage of Macau. The central character of the trilingual book series is Mak the dragon.
In addition to Bernadette and Isabel, the project also involved two other educators from TIS: Winny Cheang and Alice Wong.
Bernadette has chosen to give back to the Macau community by donating 10% of the proceeds from the sale of the books to MCDA (Macau Child Development Association), a non profit organisation that helps children with autism and learning disabilities. Another 10% will be donated to MASDAW (Macau Association for Stray Dogs and Animal Welfare).
The book launch will be held at Creative Macau Center, G/F Macau Cultural Centre Building, Xian Xing Hai Avenue, Macau on March 10th at 18:00. You can purchase the books during the launch or online http://www.makbookseriesmacau.com. Bernadette will also be selling her books at Community Day on Mar 11th at TIS.
