Anyone in the school community will have taken notice of these young leaders who selflessly devote their time to run charity events in and out of school. The Millennium Charity, founded by two Grade twelve students from TIS, works day and night in order to better the lives of those living in less privileged areas around the world.
Millennium Charity started out when Grade twelve student, Maggie Siu, had the idea to create an initiative which would help the students at her school. She partnered with Brian Chen and together they created a tutoring business in hopes of donating a portion of their revenue to charity. This idea grew into a fully registered, non-profit organization that became the Millennium Charity Association. The two founders have since hired other capable students to be companions in their journey: Katie Chak as accountant, Anson Tang as secretary, and Ally Wong as the design supervisor.
Establishing a whole new organization is definitely not easy – the group has faced many challenges throughout the year, the main one being the complicated registration process of the charity organization with the government. However, through overcoming these challenges, Millennium Charity has become the successful organization it is today, earning more than MP20,000 thus far. They successfully reached their goal of opening an English classroom for local villagers in Luang Prabang, Laos, and are now looking for a bigger project to work on in China related to health or education.
It is fantastic to see students go the extra mile to improve the lives of other communities around the world. Make sure to check out the links below to stay updated on their journey.
