Meeting the Successful Entrepreneur – Guest Speaker : Glenn McCartney

Posted on February 6, 2018

Mr. Glenn McCartney was invited to speak with our Grade 10 CALM class about his personal experience as an entrepreneur. CALM stands for Career and Life Management and is part of the Alberta program for senior high school. Its aim is to enable students to make well-informed, considered decisions and choices in all aspects of their lives.

Grade 10 students Sariputra Tong and Jessica Chen share their thoughts following meeting the guest speaker.

“Learning is lifelong,” said Mr. McCartney. Mr. McCartney is a well known successful entrepreneur in Macau, who owns an Irish bar and cafe in Taipa. He has a bachelor, master, and doctorate degree and is Associate Professor and Acting Associate Dean at the Faculty Business Administration at the University of Macau. He is a 3rd Dan Black Belt and Chinese Martial Art instructor. In 2016, he was awarded and received from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) at Buckingham Palace.

He is a man who works on the plane when others are sleeping, the man who goes to the gym when others are on their phones, a man who has clear goals whose schedule is so packed that there is no time to check his social media. What does it take to become a successful person who manages to balance his career and hobbies? It all links to his ability to remain committed, ability to take risks, his self-motivation, confidence, and most importantly, his optimistic attitude and time management. Throughout his projects, he encountered many failures, yet he remains optimistic and does not let obstacles bring him down, but becoming better from these lessons learned. He doesn’t only dream to become successful, he puts his effort and time, prioritizing what should be prioritized, becoming a successful event manager, entrepreneur, Kung-fu master and teacher. We were very fortunate to have him come to our class and give us a short presentation. This short presentation tells us a lot about Mr. McCartney, and we sure learned a lot from him. The road to success is – hardworking, innovative, passionate and never give up.
