TIS students are no strangers to reaching out and helping those less fortunate than themselves. However, last week’s visit from Salva Dut, our first Activist-in-Residence, touched the hearts of all our students inspiring them to make a difference.
The program has been a huge success and has given our students a learning experience they will remember forever. The anticipation and excitement for Salva’s arrival was akin to that of groupies waiting for their favourite rockstar to arrive. And these groupies were not disappointed as Salva spoke with students from kindergarten through to high school, while activities organised by Steve Sostak & Aaron from Inspire Citizens inspired students to think outside of the box.
The two day visit ended with a student led leadership conference where students from high school, middle school and grade 6 came together to share ideas on global issues. Students from Macau Anglican College were also invited to attend the leadership conference. The aim of the Activist-in-Residence program was to meet our mission of teaching our students to become “socially responsible, lifelong learners able to problem solve, think critically, and make positive changes in our global community”. This program has ticked all these boxes. Through learning about Salva’s life and work, our students have gained further empathy, global perspective and a deeper understanding of the world beyond their doorstep.
In the words of Salva, “This world is so small, we’ve become one village. Whatever’s happening in this part of the world is all our problem together and we should always look on people who cannot help themselves and be able to help them.”
The school was able to share this experience with our extended community at a cocktail and fundraising reception “An Evening with Salva Dut”. The event was well attended by parents, staff and special guests including representatives from the DSEJ and the school board. All those present were moved hearing Salva tell his story of survival and perseverance. The local press also took great interest in the event and have helped to spread Salva’s story to an even wider audience. TIS is proud to have played a role in raising awareness about the need for clean drinking water in South Sudan.
