With the end of the 2016-2017 school year only a few months away, I wanted to update you on a number of items that will affect the next school year.
Admissions for 2017-18
We are currently finalizing admissions tests and interviews for 2017-18. Once again, we are facing an overwhelming number of applicants and will only be able to offer seats to a fraction of those who apply. As such, we will only be able to reserve seats for current TIS students who reserve their 2017-18 seats by paying the deposit by April 30, 2017.
North Wing & South Wing Use
The new North Wing will house the main office, kindergarten classes and high school classes. The elementary and middle school classes will continue to be located in the South Wing. The new facilities in the North Wing such as the libraries, the theatre, the computer labs, art rooms and music room will be used by all students.
2017-18 School Calendar
The 2017-18 School Calendar is now finalized. Each year is a challenge to meet both Alberta Education’s requirements and DSEJ’s requirements. You will see two sets of day calculations on the calendar since both agencies calculate instructional days differently. Click here to download the new calendar. Please feel free to contact the office for clarification if you have any questions.
Tuition Increases for 2017-18
Recognizing the higher tuition increases in previous years, the board has approved a substantially lower increase in tuition levels for next year. School fees will increase by an average of 5.9% or roughly $500 MOP more per month.
2016-17 | Increase | 2017-18 | |
PreK, JK, SK | 70,000 | +4,000 | 74,000 |
Gr. 1-3 | 88,000 | +5,000 | 93,000 |
Gr. 4-6 | 94,000 | +6,000 | 100,000 |
Gr. 7-9 | 99,000 | +6,000 | 105,000 |
Gr. 10-12 | 105,000 | +6,000 | 111,000 |
School fees consist of two parts; the tuition fee and other fees. Approximately 25% of school fees are designated as other fees. Other fees include textbooks and handouts, online educational materials, arts and crafts supplies, insurance, all field trips within Macao, snacks for kindergarten, and overseas examinations for high school.
The tuition increase will help to fund the following:
– Staff salaries: average increase of 3.9%. This is in line with the Macau inflation rate.
– The teacher professional development fund maximum will be increased by $1000 MOP to enable teachers to attend more PD and to cover more of the costs associated with PD.
– Additional operational costs associated with the North Wing. As a reminder, as per DSEJ requirements, student tuition cannot be used for construction costs. School fees are used for the annual operational and delivery costs associated with the TIS program.
– Additional office staff to better meet the needs of the increased enrollment and to provide enhanced service to our families.
– Additional student support staff.
September Fee Payment
Don’t forget to reserve your spot for next year. The initial fee payment for 2017-18 will be due on April 30. The payment allows us to reserve a placement for your child. Given the increasing demand and waiting lists, it will not be possible to reserve a placement for 2017-18 unless this fee is paid.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to call, email or meet with me at your convenience.
