Eight grade 9 students at TIS recently participated in the TIS PhotoVoice Project (TPVP). Photovoice is a process by which people can identify, represent, and enhance their community through a specific photographic technique. Using cameras, they act as recorders and potential catalysts for social action and change in their own communities. At TIS, the purpose of the project was to enable students to explore the issues of climate change and emergencies in Macau by taking photos in their community. Afterwards, they analyzed the photos to uncover common themes.
Students identified pollution and the loss of green space and natural habitat due to construction as ways Macau is contributing to climate change. They also showed concern regarding the possible impact that rising sea levels may have on new construction in low-lying areas in Macao. Students identified Macau’s recycling program, its parks, and the presence of emergency equipment and infrastructure as strengths or assets to address climate change and emergencies.
Finally, students recognized the frustrating cycle of how humans contribute to the problem of climate change, but don’t make enough of an effort to improve the situation. Students identified efficiency with resources and recycling as ways they could help to address climate change and emergencies in Macao.
The student’s findings will be included in an article that will be presented at the Poverty and Social Protection Conference in Bangkok on March 9-11.
