Howard Stribbell, Head of School
There is no doubt that when it comes to school, getting good grades is important. I am confident that every child and parent opens up the report card hoping to see that the student is meeting or exceeding the learning outcomes and achieving as high as possible. At the end of grade 12, these marks are used to request admission into universities around the world. However, getting good grades only tells one side of the story. More and more universities are looking for students that not only have good grades, but are also well-rounded students.
What does it mean to be well-rounded?
First Level
Traditionally, well-rounded has meant developing a student’s fine arts and athletic skills in addition to their academic skills. Here at TIS, we give students a variety of opportunities to participate on sports teams, perform in shows and develop their musical and artistic skills. Through these activities students learn independence, confidence, poise, team work and sportsmanship. These are all important traits that will benefit them in the future.
Second Level
Today, well-rounded also includes seeking out leadership opportunities, giving back to your community and developing 21st century skills. Students who participate in student council, captain a sports team, represent the school at the Model United Nations or participate in global leadership conferences gain valuable skills in leadership and group work. Volunteering in Macau or abroad builds empathy in students. Today, students must also become competent digital citizens in addition to learning technology-based skills.
Third Level
Lastly, universities and employers of the future are seeking those students that go even further. They are looking for students that can demonstrate collaboration skills, have an international perspective and can be global citizens. It has been said that we are preparing students for jobs that don’t even exist yet. As such, their ability to work together, to learn and un-learn as well as contribute to a global economy is increasingly important.
The TIS Advantage
The TIS Advantage displays how the various components of an education at TIS works to build well-rounded students. Students learn and grow through the unique combination of academics, athletics, fine arts, community partnerships, technology integration, inquiry based learning, volunteer opportunities and international trips. With the correct support and guidance along the way, they emerge as successful students who are well prepared for university and for life.
