Romano recently graduated from TIS Class of 2017. He is currently interning at TIS while waiting to start university in Australia.
What do you do for your internship?
I do all sorts of administrative work from printing, copying, scanning and translating documents for the Academic Counselling team. Sometimes, I will help Mr. Coates’ assistant Vanessa when I am free.
What is it like to come back to school for internship while your friends are in universities?
It is pretty sad actually. There is no one there for you anymore and you will start to feel lonely. I have to treasure what I have, the TIS family, my family and my friends.
What are your plans after your internship with the school?
I am looking forward to my university adventure to start and meeting up my friends again in December when they come back for the holidays.
What did you learn from this internship?
I learnt how to send mass emails, emails that you send to a lot of people, professional emails, cold calls and cold emails. Professional emails are actually very different. You have to be very polite, formal and precise. You have to say greetings instead of hello and the email must be free from useless content. Cold calls and cold emails are messages that you hope someone would reply or pick up. I was able to obtain new management skills and get a peek into the teacher’s life. I also had the opportunity to work with DSEJ. I learnt all the behind the scenes that students would never see in classrooms.
Any interesting or funny inside stories to share?
Ms. Doland dislikes mess. She cleans up my things because I am very messy. Mr. D’Entremont is a movie freak and loves Cormac McCarthy. Ms. Hubert is a genius, she knows programming and engineering. She once built a bike in middle school and tried to work at Microsoft.
Any advice for current students?
Do not take teachers and things for granted. Teachers work very very hard for the students. I never knew this when I was a student here. For example, the Annual University Fair which was a one day event that took place recently, took us three months of hard work to prepare and organize it.
