Air Quality and Student Health

Posted on February 12, 2015

It’s hard not to notice the haze that’s been hanging over Macau lately. The air quality has been particularly poor, which is always a concern for our students’ health. Pollution levels are taken into account on a daily basis and the school is taking measures to limit students’ exposure.

TIS recently implemented a policy at the beginning of February whereby all outdoor recesses, PE classes, sports practices and outdoor field trips are cancelled when the air quality index reaches 200. We are investigating whether we should reduce it further (ie. 160 or 180) for activities requiring further exertion such as PE classes or sports activities. Our Health, Safety and Wellness committee is reviewing the practices of other schools and we are soliciting feedback from parents.

In addition, the pollution index has been added to our internal intranet. All staff monitor the index and adjust their activities accordingly.
