Bhutan
Etho Metho
Travel to the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan and learn about Bhutanese history, culture, religion, and politics in the ‘happiest country in Asia’. Hike to the Tiger’s Nest monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site; visit a school for children with special needs; and plant a tree in support of Bhutan’s environment. You will also see Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin, at a preserve in Thimphu, and witness the rich artistic efforts of musicians and textile makers.
DRAFT ITINERARY
Day 1
Travel from Macau to Bangkok (Overnight in Bangkok)
Day 2
-Arrive at Paro. Transfer to Thimphu Valley (2 hours/54 Kms) and check into hotel (Phuntsho Pelril). Twin rooms (2 students per room)
-Lunch at hotel (*local restaurant also possible)
-Walk to National Memorial Chorten
-Clean up campaign with local community members of Coronation Park
-End the day by visiting Thimphu’s weekend Farmer’s market
-Dinner at hotel (*Local restaurant option also possible)
-Overnight at Hotel in Thimphu
Day 3
-Early hike to Cheri Temple (2 hours round trip). (Cheri Goemba)
-Transfer to Thimphu Valley
-Visit Institute for Zorig Chusum (art school to observe students undergoing art courses.
-Lunch at local restaurant
-Visit Institute of Traditional Art and Daphne Paper Factory.
-2:45 Visit to Changjiji READ library. Reading with local women and children (*book donations?)
-Back to hotel for one hour interactive session with Gross national happiness expert featured on TED talks
-Dinner at Momo restaurant
Day 4
-Breakfast
-Interact with students from ELC high school. Enjoy Mistry Terrace Concert.
-Drive to Statue of Sakyamuni Buddha
-Tree planting project
-Lunch at local restaurant
-visit to Draktsho Vocational Training Centre for Special Children and Youth where you will interact with local children and their livelihoods
-Evening visit to Tashichho Dzong Fortress
-Dinner and evening performance by local band “The Baby Boomers”
Day 5
–Breakfast
-Transfer to back to Paro (2 hours)
-Lunch at local restaurant in Paro
-Visit to Rinpung Dzong
-Visit to Drukgyel Dzong
-Participate in Paro Valley
-walking around streets of Paro (good chance for souvenirs)
-Dinner at hotel or local restaurant
-Overnight at Tenzinling Resort in Paro
Day 6
-Breakfast
-Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s nest) *5 hours round trip on steep climb through forest)
-Lunch at the tea cafeteria
-Enjoy a local cultural show and archery tournament at a local farm house. Play game of darts
-Dinner at Farm house
-Overnight at Tenzinling Resort in Paro.
Day 7
Depart Paro and Fly back to Macau.
