A school of many talents, TIS is made up of several communities in which students strive. Artists, however, often work alone. At least, that’s the common misconception. Despite this, Artists do enjoy company, especially when with others who share their passions. Now, artists can collaborate together with the new art centered council here at TIS. Communities are what TIS is built upon, and with one for Sports, Leadership, and even the Sciences, it is within due time that TIS presents: The TIS Arts Council.
The Council was created as a fun and collaborative community for all artists to share their passions. The TIS Arts Council is made up of students with a love for the arts and is supported by our staff advisor Ms. Tonner. Within the council, each person is assigned a different role depending on what events are being planned and executed. We work together, helping each other through any struggles and I personally have already made new friends through this experience. Together, we have begun building the base of what we hope will be a strong standing community long after 2018 has gone and passed. This is accomplished through engaging activities that appeal to artists.
On the 13th of February, the TIS Arts Council hosted a movie night to raise money for artistic activities that the school can enjoy. The entire black box theatre was filled with excited children and their parents, all of whom had come to see the film. It was a successful occasion, much to the relief of my teammates. Our first official event was a blast as the youngsters seemed to really enjoy it.
Confident after the previous evenings splendor, on February the 14th (in celebration of valentine’s day), the TIS Arts Council put on a lunchtime performance for secondary students. We sang, played instruments, and even danced which some people even joined in on. It was an amazing turn of events, considering how nervous the Art Council was to perform. It was the perfect Valentine’s day entertainment; of course, showcasing the student’s amazing talents was a huge bonus! We wanted to break the stigma that art is always traditional, but rather includes dancing and singing as well!
More exciting still, the Arts Council has put forth a proposition for a common room that all artists of TIS will have access to. The motivation behind it was to have a space where artists could come at any time to be artististic and create together. Whether that be painting, sketching, dancing, singing, all are welcome to practice their art. A suitable room has not yet been decided upon, but it is part of our future plans.
The Arts Council has many ideas and plans, but we are still just a very small community within the vastness of TIS. So, we invite you to join and contribute! If interested, please send us an email at artscouncil@tis.edu.mo, and follow us on instagram at tis_arts_council. We hope to see you soon!
